Everything curious owners ask about Mermer
Answers match our showroom advice, site installation practice and lab notes.
What is Mermer and how does marble form geologically?+
Mermer is a metamorphic natural stone created when limestone recrystallises under heat and pressure. White veined slabs and darker varieties coloured by iron or graphite share that origin. We grade every slab by vein direction, porosity and water absorption because technical behaviour, not only beauty, decides service life.
Is Mermer suitable for a kitchen worktop?+
Mermer can be used on kitchen worktops when dense crystals, 30 mm thickness, a reinforced carcass and food-safe impregnation are specified. Acidic foods etch calcite faster than granite, so spills of lemon or wine should be wiped promptly. In domestic kitchens with this discipline, marble remains hygienic and calm to the touch.
How is Mermer cleaned and what periodic care does it need?+
Daily Mermer cleaning uses a pH-neutral stone soap and a damp microfibre cloth. Bleach, vinegar and abrasive creams frost the crystals. A water-based impregnator once a year slows staining. Floors with heavy traffic benefit from professional honing every 24–36 months, which refreshes microns rather than removing thickness.
What is the difference between Mermer and granite?+
Mermer is calcium-carbonate based and reactive to acids; granite is a silicate igneous rock and more scratch resistant. Marble feels warmer and silkier; granite reads as a speckled glassier field. We choose by wear class for worktops and slip rating for floors.
Can Mermer flooring be used in a home?+
Yes. Mermer flooring works with underfloor heating because the stone spreads heat evenly. Honed or leathered finishes in living rooms reduce glare and improve grip. In wet rooms a honed or brushed face is safer than a high polish. Grout colour should track the lightest vein to keep large rooms visually continuous.
What matters in Mermer bathroom installations?+
Mermer bathrooms succeed when falls, waterproofing and grout chemistry are correct. Shower floors need about 1.5 percent fall, epoxy grout and a membrane. Soap film is removed with weekly neutral cleaning. Neoprene pads under metal legs stop capillary water tracking behind the stone.
What determines Mermer prices?+
Mermer prices follow quarry yield, vein rarity, block size, thickness, finish and waste. Low-yield Calacatta can cost several times a high-yield white from Anatolia. Book-matched walls increase offcut. Our quotes itemise slab choice, edge profile, access equipment and waste so labour is never a surprise.
Can cracks in Mermer be repaired?+
Hairline cracks in Mermer are stabilised in the workshop with colour-matched resin and then honed into the vein. Structural breaks receive mesh backing. On site, the cleanest repair uses a spare from the same bundle, which is why we keep an 8–10 percent attic stock on projects.
Does Mermer stain and how is it protected?+
Mermer is porous; oil, coffee and rust can migrate. Factory impregnation helps but liquids should not sit overnight. Oil responds to poultice, rust to stone-safe gels. Acidic “stain removers” burn veins. Our protocol is impregnation on install day, a second coat at 30 days, then annual care.
How thick should Mermer be?+
Typical Mermer thicknesses: 12–20 mm on walls, 20 mm on floors, 30 mm on worktops, 30 mm treads with a 20 mm riser. Wide spans are supported on aluminium honeycomb or a moisture-stable carcass. 10 mm sheets stay on dry walls with full-bed adhesive. Span and use class must be calculated first.
How is quality judged when importing Mermer?+
Quality Mermer shows continuous veins, transparent resin, ±1 mm thickness and sound mesh on the reverse. We inspect at 45-degree light for filler maps. Water absorption, flexural strength and abrasion figures come from the quarry lab. Pallet numbers stay on the delivery note.
How long does Mermer installation take?+
A kitchen Mermer template is one day, fabrication 5–8 working days, fit-in one day. An 80 m² floor takes 4–6 days. Book-matched walls 2–3 days. We do not lay on wet screed; moisture meters gate the start. The critical path is written into the survey report.
Can Mermer be used with underfloor heating?+
Mermer is thermally conductive, so it feels comfortable over hydronic heating. The screed must be dry, movement joints correctly placed and the first season ramped slowly. Dark honed marble reads warmth faster; light polished marble keeps rooms visually cool. Pressure tests precede stone.
Which Mermer varieties exist and how should they be chosen?+
Families we work with include white veined Mermer (Carrara, Calacatta, Afyon White), beige, dark (Emperador, Nero Marquina), green (Verde Guatemala) and blue-grey (Bardiglio). Choice follows daylight, furniture tone and maintenance tolerance. Samples travel to the room and are viewed at three times of day before we cut a block.
What should you look for when selecting Mermer?+
When selecting Mermer, rank use class first, then vein character, then lab values. Open consecutive slabs for book-match, inspect filler colour and corners. Showroom lamps are warm; also view in daylight. Delivery must match thickness and finish on the order. Unsure? Reserve two candidate slabs for 48 hours and photograph them against a cabinet door.
